helping searching people discover new life in Christ

Serving others is more than just talking about doing good things for others-it's actually reaching out and getting involved, making a difference in people's lives. At Discovery we believe being active in hands-on service opportunities is part of the lifestyle of being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Here are some of the ways the people of Discovery are serving. You are invited to join in on one of these opportunities.

The Village

Discovery at the Village is our satellite congregation at an assisted living facility, The Village at Riverchase. We provide weekly Sunday morning worship services and pastoral support for the residents and staffs of this facility. If you are interested in being a part of this rewarding ministry, please contact Joe Jones 987-9995.

Firehouse Shelter

The Old Firehouse Shelter in downtown Birmingham is a homeless shelter for men. Discovery provides food and meal service to the homeless men several times each year. This ministry is always looking for people to prepare or deliver food, as well as host overnight. If you are interested in becoming involved in this ministry, contact the church's office.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that provides low-income housing for families in need. Discovery members provide hands-on labor and financial support. If you would like to spend the day swinging a hammer or helping out in some other way, please contact the church office. Someone will be glad to help schedule you for the next project.

Hurricane Katrina Relief

Discovery continues to be active in helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina rebuild their lives and homes as areas of the Gulf Coast continue the recovery process. Teams of short-term volunteers head to the Mississippi Coast.

Festival of Three Kings

Each Christmas, The Festival of Three Kings commemorates the gifts brought to the baby Jesus at his manger. We do this by providing Christmas gifts to children in the Birmingham area. Each December, we host a carnival along with other United Methodist Churches in the area. While the children are partying, their parents or guardians are upstairs picking up the gifts that have been provided. This allows the child's family to be the ones who actually give the child their gifts on Christmas morning.
This ministry is both rewarding and fun as well. If you would like to learn more, contact the church's office.
